About Us

1st Brighstone Sea Scouts was formed in 1910. We meet in a purpose built “hut” in the centre of Brighstone. You will find us in North Street, just behind the Wilberforce Hall.

We draw members from the immediate villages around Brighstone and even as far away as Niton, Newport, Freshwater and Ningwood. We currently have around 70 to 80 young members in the Beaver, Cub, Scout and Explorer sections.

All 4 sections of the Group are extremely active and have a reputation for providing high quality Scouting over a sustained period of many years. We actively seek ways of supporting our community.

The Scout Troop and Explorer Scout Unit are Sea Scouts and the members are able to take part in kayaking, canoeing and sailing alongside the normal Troop and Unit programmes.

Our leaders are all volunteers. All undergo an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check through The Scout Association. There is always at least one adult who is first aid qualified.

Scout leader responsibilities include ensuring safety, delivering a balanced and engaging program, mentoring and coaching young people, managing volunteers and resources, and fostering positive relationships within the Scout group and the wider community. Leaders are also responsible for upholding Scouting values, encouraging youth leadership, delegating tasks effectively, and facilitating communication between Scouts, parents, and other adults.

If you would like the opportunity to do something you’d never thought of doing, while having lots of fun and giving back to the community at the same time, please get in touch – we can always do with more leaders! You don’t have to be an expert in all-things-scouting – the only essential ingredient is wanting to have fun scouting!

We always need more adults to join our team leading our kayaking and Canadian canoeing sessions.

This is a brilliant activity and we run sessions for our Scouts and Explorers between May and October. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who could spare, say, one evening a week during this period.

If you do not have any British Canoe Union qualifications don’t worry as we can arrange training to get you to the required level. If you would like to help please get in touch using the form on the contact us page or ring Chris on 740397
